Info About Bats The most common bats in our buildings are Mexican Free Tail bats, Evening bats, Small Brown bats, and Large Brown bats. Depending on the species and available space, bats can have colonies of a few dozen, to millions! The reason for the laws protecting bats and exercising humane removal is their vital role in our ecosystem, and how they contribute to our quality of life. For example – when the million and a half bats that live under the Congress Street bridge in Austin leave the bridge each evening, they can consume up to 30,000 pounds of insects that can be harmful to us. In Houston we have a growing colony of beneficial bats that live under the Waugh Drive bridge over Buffalo Bayou.
	Getting Them Removed From Our Buildings We want the benefits from bats without the inconvenience from them living in our homes. Since the use of chemicals, poisons, trapping or transporting bats is illegal; as a certified bat exclusionist I employ humane methods of letting them leave and then take precautions to prevent their return. Different bat species have their babies (puppies) at different times of the year. The months of May through September are critical months and exclusions are often prohibited. During these months no exclusions may be able to take place because the puppies would not be included and they would stay in the building and die. Other acceptable precautions can be taken until babies can safely fly away.
What Is the Cost? Costs will vary depending upon the location and overall complexity of the job, as well as any added requests. Since there is a tendency for the bats to return to the same location, you may wish to set up an agreement that will cover return trips as needed. If necessary I will work out a specific agreement with you that will cover the needs of your situation. There is a minimum preliminary inspection fee.
